Therefore, I was climbing almost all weekends and during the week as often as possible - day and night. Climbing late at night with headlamps was sometimes the only possibility to overcome the darkness.
So this is my current list of climbing locations I really like (ordered in decreasingly)
- Rabensteiner (in Carinthia, approx. 10km from my home)
- Töschling (in Carinthia as well, close to Klagenfurt and the Wörthersee)
- Thalhofergrat (in Lower-Austria)
- Arnstein (in Lower-Austria)
- Jammerwandl @ Helental
- Bouldering @ Pier9
But it was not all about climbing. Almost all times when being at Arnstein or Thalhofergrat, a nice BBQ was included. About 10 climbers sitting in front of a nice pawn fire having a beer, chatting ... about life, universe and everything ... good food and the silence of the night outside of Vienna were present.
So here are some pics from all that stuff:
Helental: Jammerwandl
The Helental is located close to Baden in Lower-Austria and about a 40 minutes ride from Vienna. The rock itself is very nice but due to so many climbers a little bit slippery. Anyways a nice location to climb with the option of simple bouldering at the Helentaler Blöcke, about a 10 minute walk from the Jammerwandl.
Jammerwandl at its brightes: sunshine all day long
Nice rock, nice overhangs, nice grooves, nice cracks
One of my favorite locations close to Vienna due to its nice topo. Many routes from 2-11 (UIAA) especially in grade of 7 and 8 - so a perfect playground for me to get pro and reach the 9 ;-) Moreover there is a nice cave where you can climb some short top-rope-routes as well as do some bouldering when it's rainy outside. In addition, fire places to do a BBQ afterward make the place almost perfect.
BBQ at Arnstein: in the blue shirt, one of the best climbers I know (Johannes), to his right his girlfriend Sandra and the guy with the black shirt: Andy
Me in one of my fav. routes: Desireè (9, UIAA) at the toughest position: a dynamo with the right hand to the top, hanging there with just 2 fingers of your left hand and a right-foot-hook.
Thalhofergrat: close to Peilstein as well
Close to the Arnstein there is another great location in the area of the Peilstein region: the Thalhofergrat.
Offering almost all difficulties for climbers, the rock is very solid and handy. (one will find slippery parts very seldom). There are several sectors at this location, some directed to the south-west (good in spring, early summer and autumn), some to the east (good in summer).

Rabensteiner @ Carinthia:
Close to my home in Carinthia, there are the ruins of castle Rabenstein. Located on the rock where originally the castle was build, there is a climbing location with about 80 routes, some of them ending at the walls of the ruins.
Rabenstein is offering very nice and handy solid rock in all variations: grooves, overhangs, cracks, slabs, ...
I just love that location.

Bouldering @ Pier9: Vienna
When being in Vienna working during the day, Pier9 is offering a nice wall to do some bouldering after work. Located close to the U6 station Spittelau it's easy to reach. The wall is made out of concrete offering various problems in all difficulties.
A nice thing about it: the wall structure is repeated 4 times but at different angles. So one can solve problems at the vertical wall trying to finish them on the overhanging one as well.

So far the report from my favorite places to climb,
Harald
